Build compliance into every process, every system with Decision Management

I was pointed to a blog post today from the folks at Forrester talking about their Governance Risk and Compliance Platform wave report.  In an era of increasing regulation and increasing costs for compliance failures, these kinds of platforms are clearly important. These platforms help you manage documentation, track overall levels of risk, generate required reporting, identify root causes for problems, manage your audit and investigation processes and more. These platforms manage and execute your compliance processes effectively. Yet there is another aspect to risk and compliance – how to build compliance into every day to day process and system.

To build compliance into your day to day systems and processes you must ensure that when your systems act on your behalf they do so in a compliant, appropriate way. In other words you must ensure that the actions they take are compliant and can be demonstrated to be compliant. When faced with a decision point, you need your systems to make compliant decisions and to help your front line staff make compliant decisions. This other set of requirements is why Decision Management matters so much to compliance and why I am giving a webinar with Jan Purchase of LuxMagi on Agile and Cost Effective Financial Compliance (register here).

Decision Management, combined with business rules management systems, is an ideal platform for delivering operational compliance.  Identifying the operational decisions you make, using a business rules management system to build decision services to automate these decisions with consistency and transparency, and monitoring these decisions over time delivers compliance every day. Business rules give you the agility and transparency you need but should be combined with a decision management approach to ensure the coherence and integrity that you need. Using decision modeling to scope out automation, support agile development improve traceability and generate accurate requirements is an emerging best practice.

Companies that fail to make compliance both pervasive and automatic incur huge costs from manual checks and risk significant fines. Applying Decision Management and business rules builds compliance into every operational process and system.
