Focus Data Projects on Improving Decisions

Focus Data Projects on Improving Decisions

Many organizations today are investing heavily in data projects to improve data-driven decision making. But paradoxically most of these projects don’t consider decisions explicitly.  Data projects usually begin with data capture before understanding what data will be useful, for what action and for what benefit.  Without understanding the decision making that will improve business performance and […]

Analytic practitioners speak – an interview with author Nauman Sheikh

I have been interviewing analytic practitioners periodically – last year I interested Andrea Scarso, CEO of MoneyFarm and more recently I interviewed Tracy Allison Altman, co-founder of Ugly Research.  Next up is Nauman Sheikh, a seasoned professional of Data & Analytics. Nauman was introduced to me by a client who really liked his book Implementing Analytics: A Blueprint […]

Nauman was introduced to me by a client who really liked his book Implementing Analytics: A Blueprint for Design, Development, and Adoption (as do I). Nauman and I share a passion for making sure that analytics are not just developed, but deployed into decision making systems and processes.

What’s your background, how did you come to be working in analytics?

First Look: Valen InsureRight

Valen Analytics has been around since 2004 and is focused on providing proprietary data, analytics and predictive modeling to the Property and Casualty market with 25 customers in production. To help carriers manage and segment their portfolios to drive underwriting profitability, Valen develops productized models based on pooled consortium data for carriers. Valen’s InsureRight platform allows them to collect data from multiple carriers, develop consortium models with this anonymized data and external data, and then tune and deploy these models for each carrier to use in production. The platform has a series of layers:

  • A base layer stores industry data and external data as well as providing a data warehouse for reporting against their customers’ systems of record. Predictive analytic models are then built with this data.
  • There is a layer that supports data governance, scoring of the predictive models and portfolio m

First Look: Revolution Analytics 7

In the 9 months or so since I last wrote about Revolution Analytics they have released a new version of Revolution R Enterprise 7. This is focused on delivering “Write once deploy anywhere.” R, of course, continues to expand in popularity with the recent Rexer Data Mining survey (reviewed here) putting the percentage of data miners that use it at 70%. Revolution Analytics has been focused all along on helping address some of the challenges of open source R by delivering a version that is not in-memory bound and that supports parallel threading for instance. Version 7 has a number of new capabilities.

  • First, Revolution Analytics has continued to add to the set of R packages available on their scalable multi-threaded platform, with Stepwise Logistic Regression, Stepwise GLM,

First Look: Cascading Pattern

As part of some ongoing research on support for PMML I recently spoke with Concurrent. Concurrent is an enterprise software company focused on simplifying Big Data development on Hadoop. The company’s core product is called Cascading. This is a free, open-source, development framework for Apache Hadoop designed to let developers build sophisticated data processing applications […]

First Look: Informatica CEP

I got caught up with Informatica recently, checking in with them on their Complex Event Processing (CEP) technologies. They have recently been talking about decision management, especially in healthcare where their new Informatica Proactive Healthcare Decision Management solution is based on their CEP engine. Like me Informatica see a historical, summarization focus in business intelligence […]
